Digitization of preventive maintenance on field service assets for field technicians

The app was built to pursue this as a concept for ENGIE- a French multinational energy company.

Role
I worked as a solo designer in the project receiving passive design feedback from a Senior designer and UX director. I was responsible to facilitate design communication and collaboration with product management and engineering at various stages of the design process. My core work involved activities from User experience design and User interface design.

The Purpose

  • Work orders is a term used in field services that represent the execution of tasks but are often executed under corrective maintenance only when the breakdown/defect is identified. In the energy industry, the implications of corrective maintenance can be huge and more costly.
     

  • Hence, there is a need for preventive maintenance services that perform regularly scheduled inspections to monitor the health of assets reducing the maintenance cost drastically. Since inspection as a use case is widely used, it can act as a baseline to serve cross-functional industries. It was then decided to pursue this as a concept for ENGIE- a French multinational energy company.

The Opportunity

While working in the area of field services, the company realised some core opportunities-

  • The cross-functional potential of the inspection services

  • Lack of digitisation in the work process

  • Easy of creating, scheduling and performing jobs and workforce
     

Hence the aim was to build an inspection app by adding more value to existing clients and also explore new markets.

Design process

Research

Due to the low budget and aggressive timeline ,I gathered data on the target user group and use case through market research and facilitated communication with stakeholders and multiple collaborative sessions with product management exchanging ideas, notes, sketches, flows.

Based on the data we got, we analysed the product requirement document to evaluate any design discrepancy which was then communicated, discussed and reprioritised(if necessary).

Target audience

  • Field Technicians: Those who have the technical expertise and are the company’s representatives on the field. They have a detailed set of inspection instructions and steps that they follow while executing an inspection.
     

  • Planning & Tracking Representative: Those who directly interact with customers to understand the inspection requirements and schedules. They plan schedules and track the inspections to better serve customers and facilitate preventive, and corrective maintenances.

Ideate

Rough notes and sketches were done for a high-level Information hierarchy and technical notes. Post to which, initial sketches were turned to low fidelity wireframes which followed feedback from the design and PM side.

Testing & feedback

Cross function team meetings were a usual part of the process for regular inputs during the design process. I also made sure to receive design feedback as often as possible, followed by iterations.

Real-time valuable information on asset details, measurement guide & history to make informed decisions.

Handoff
 

The app had to be developed through in-house software used to build low code cross-platform apps. Since I had worked on the software in previous projects, I was aware of technical understanding and limitations to some extent. I used this knowledge to navigate the design handoff smoothly and solve a few issues.

Impact

The app was successfully shipped on time and pitched to the client. The project was appreciated and received good feedback and was also used for different project pitches to attract new clients.
